We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint. It’s at the core of who we are and we are making great strides towards that goal. We have implemented many strategies that have a tremendous impact on our use of fossil fuels with very little effort on our part. Here are some of the things we have done to offset our carbon footprint.
First and foremost our biggest use of carbon fuels comes from the vehicles used to deliver our coffee. This year we have utilized UPS’s carbon neutral shipping program to do our part on putting back what we use. UPS’s carbon neutral option supports projects that offset the emissions of the shipment’s transport. UPS has supported projects that include reforestation, landfill gas destruction, wastewater treatment, and methane destruction. UPS’s carbon neutral option is verified by Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS), an inspection, testing, and verification company. This means that you can have confidence in the UPS carbon neutral method. Additionally, our carbon offset process is certified by The CarbonNeutral Company.
Secondly, we roast coffee. Just the word “roast” requires that we burn some type of fuel to bring those beans from green to a lovely chocolate brown. We spent literally hundreds of hours and months of time choosing the company we would utilize to build our coffee roaster. After much deliberation we choose a Diedrich IR-12 for many reasons. Diedrich Manufacturing has always been committed to our environment; this is not a new politically correct position for them. They started this with our use of infrared burners which are 50-60% more energy efficient and cleaner burning than any other burner on the market. That alone was an impressive statistic but the consistency of each roast through the use of both level 1 automation and impeccable engineering made this the only choice for us.
There are many other things we have done including changing all light bulbs to energy star certified light bulbs, using less paper in our order and fulfillment process and using our coffee grinds and chaff for composting and fertilizing our outdoor spaces.
We are looking forward to future plans to utilize solar and wind technologies in our continuing effort to help save our planet.
